Please welcome Spray to the Club Fleet!

The “CLUB ENSIGN” has arrived at TYC for the 2019 season and is available to all TYC Members for use for day sailing, sailing instruction and racing starting August 1 and running through the Chowder Series.

There is a signup sheet, checkout list and related information on the launch desk. Members using the vessel must have a CT Safe Boating certificate and include on board at least one experienced skipper as explained in the user information documents which are posted at the club and on line at the TYC website. Current Ensign sailors may address any further questions.

After some consideration the boat maintains its original name.

This is the second season at TYC for “SPRAY”. It is moored in the north field, has a white hull and grey superstructure and two-tone boom tent. She was been donated to TYC in 2018 courtesy of New London’s Ensign Fleet 57 members, with the goal of introducing the benefits of Ensign sailing to youth and adult sailors and supporting TYC’s learn to sail programs. She is equipped with a spinnaker and # 1 genoa and there is a working jib for easy day sailing. There are two life jackets on board and users are asked to bring additional life jackets as needed.

Consider forming a team and sign up for the Oscar Kerman races on Members Weekend August 9-12! One design racing is a great opportunity to improve sailing skills. In races last fall SPRAY showed well and proved to be a competitive Ensign.

From the Ensign class Association website:

“The Ensign is the largest class of full keel sailboats in North America, with over 2000 boats manufactured since 1962. Designed by Carl Alberg, its sustained popularity is due to very solid and durable construction, and a design that lends itself equally and admirably to comfortable family cruising, enjoyable day sailing, and close, strategic, tactical racing.

The Ensign Class is one of the strongest national organizations, with numerous local fleets from coast to coast. As a family day sailor, the Ensign has a large, deep cockpit, with enough room to comfortably seat six to eight adults. Its full keel provides a secure, stable ride, and its three foot draft makes it perfect for the shallower waters of bays and lakes and for anchoring fairly close to a protected shore.”
