TYC offers youth and adult sailing classes from beginner to advanced levels, setting sail from the sandy beaches of the lower Thames River within easy reach of Long Island Sound. An understanding of seamanship and sailing skills build confidence in young sailors as well as an appreciation for boating.

Youth Sailing

Whether your child is just beginning to sail or is sharpening their skills for a summer full of small boat fun or racing, the staff and facilities of the Thames Yacht Club Sailing Instruction program can enhance any young sailor’s abilities.

TYC Sailing Camp

TYC’s instructors are certified by the United States Sailing Association and the Club’s Junior Sailing Program is associated with the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association and US Sailing.  The program offers classes to introduce young children to the joy of sailing and start them off with a solid foundation in sailing theory and small boat handling skills.

The program also offers classes for more experienced junior sailors.  On water instruction is conducted in Optimist Dinghies and Club 420’s.  Optimists are sailed by sailors up to age 16.

The Club 420’s are used for the Optimist graduates and older students and are used in Team Racing events.

Optimist’s

Thames Yacht Club will offer Thursday night race series for Optimist sailors who will race throughout the summer season.

1, 2, 3 or 7 week programs available. Full day sessions available, including a half-day of sailing, and a half day of marine science, swimming, and kayaking with supervised lunch (lunch not provided).

We are pleased to offer a new learning opportunity in our Youth Sailing Program: Marine and Environmental Science. Knowing more about our environment will only increase the chance for safer and cleaner waterways for now and our future. This also goes hand in hand with being a responsible sailor.

Adult Sailing

Adults, 18 and over, are offered classes to learn to sail or help sharpen their skills on the Club 420 sailing dinghies. They will be instructed by very experienced instructors. This program will help the sailors to be more comfortable on the water or prepare them to compete in the 420 Adult race series on Thursday evenings. Classes will be held on Monday or Tuesday (if needed) nights from 5:30 to 7:30 at the club house
